6 stress-busting saviours to try today

Many of us suffer from stress on a daily basis, but when you throw quarantine and social distancing into the mix, it can leave us with a whirlwind of emotions that affect our mental health. With the world on lockdown, you may be finding yourself worried about what lies ahead, and perhaps you’re feeling anxious about being in social isolation.

Stress is the feeling of being under too much mental or emotional pressure, which may lead you to feel that you’re unable to cope. It’s especially important that, during times like this, we find ways to take care of our mental wellbeing. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, there are various activities you can do to relieve stress at home.

Carve out me time

Everyone has their own idea of what pampering themselves means, but we love a good soak in the bath with bath salts, aromatherapy candles and a good book. Your ‘me’ time should be used to do something that makes you happy and helps you to relax. This might be gardening, baking, or just sitting in a quiet space without your phone.

Get some exercise

Whilst exercising certainly won’t make your worries completely disappear, it often helps to clear your mind, allowing you to better manage your stress. Exercise is also known to release endorphins that help you to be more positive, and improves self-esteem.

Try something crafty

Remember when you were a child and used to colour without a care in the world? Tap into your inner creative kid and let your worries wash away. This could be anything from sketching and painting, to creating a scrapbook or knitting your own clothes!

Breathe!

It may seem natural, but when we’re stressed, we often shorten our inhalations and exhalations without realising it. To help during particularly anxious times, try to pause and take five long, deep breaths in and out. Using this time to focus only on your breathing will automatically put your mind at ease.

Talk to someone

When your mental health is suffering, it often helps to talk to someone. This could be a friend or family member, or even someone you don’t know, if you’re feeling particularly overwhelmed. Other people may be able to help you find ways to better manage your anxiety, change your outlook to handle negative emotions and thoughts, or simply help relieve some of your stress just by listening to you express your feelings.
